Interview with Spells of the Sea Producer Megan Ann Rasmussen

Award-winning Producer Megan Ann Rasmussen shares insights into the producer’s journey.

I am grateful for the opportunity to sit down with our co-producing theater and share some insights on the role of a producer. Here are some of my thoughts about musicals, being a producer, families, and bringing Spells of the Sea to the stage!

Who inspires you to produce musicals for families?
I've been involved in theater for almost 30 years. Every audience member, family, and young person who see one of the shows I've worked on inspires me to keep doing the work. Also, I have four children of my own and they inspire me each day.

How do you work with creative teams to build new musicals?

My work is mostly behind the scenes. I'm involved in every aspect of development from bringing teams together, to finding theaters, to creating contracts, to finding investors, to working with authors, musical directors, dramaturgs, directors, designers, actors, and musicians. I also spend a lot of time helping audiences understand the show and how it will strengthen families when they see it.

What do you look for in producing musicals for families and young people?
Metro Theater Company's mission is "inspired by the intelligence and emotional wisdom of young people." When I look for a new musical to produce, I want to make sure that piece honors the intelligence and emotional wisdom of young people. The shows I am interested in inspire and uplift young people and their families. Spells Of The Sea does this.

When is the job most challenging? Most fun?
The job is challenging like a puzzle. There are a lot of pieces to fit together. Sometimes it's challenging when I have to work extra hard to get everything to work together well. It's the most fun when I hear how the show impacts the audiences. I believe theater can uplift and strengthen families. When people tell me how the show does that for their family, I'm elated. I also love the collaborative nature of working with so many creative and talented people!

Where do you find new musicals for families?
Projects come across my desk in lots of different ways. Usually there is a personal connection. One of my dear friends and closest colleagues introduced me to Spells of the Sea. I'm so glad she did!

Why is Spells Of The Sea important to you?
Spells Of The Sea encourages emotional resilience in young people. Parenting experts suggest that emotional resilience helps young people manage stress and navigate challenges better. Spells is also about healing a broken heart, experiencing a change of heart, and finding courage within each of our own hearts.  I wish these things for everyone who sees this new musical. These are just some of the reasons this show is important to me.
